| Kauhajoki defense stiffles Ura |
The Kauhajoki Bear pushed aside a slow first period and moved forward with a convincing home opening 91-57 victory over Ura Basket (0-2) on Sunday afternoon in Kauhajoki. The Bear had four players in double figure scoring but the real story was the defense Kauhajoki played in the second and third periods to put away the visitors.
Kauhajoki (2-0) trailed after the first period 18-17 but managed to refocus at the period break. The home team outscored Ura Basket 26-10 in the second period in route to a 43-28 lead at the half. Maurice Horton was key to the second period surge with his tenacious defense on Ura Basketball American point guard Armondo Surratt. Surratt, who scored 33 points last week against Vilpas in their opening game, was able to only manage 6 first half points. Even though Surratt ended up with 24 points on the night, many baskets late in the game were meaningless.
Kauhajoki started the third period where they left off before halftime. A quick 19-2 run in the middle of the third period, including 14 straight points, saw the Bear put the game away for good with a 62-30 lead. Kauhajoki basically traded baskets in the fourth period to end the game.
The Bear were lead by Eric Washington’s 23 points in just 19:55 of action. Washington missed only one shot going 4-4 from two point land and missing only one three pointer in five attempts. Brandon Polk continued his fine form notching his second double/double in as many games with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Kwamena Brace and Roni Leimu were also equally impressive scoring 15 points each with very good shooting percentages. Surratt’s 24 points and big man Derek Crayton’s 10 points were the only double figure scorers for Ura Basket.
COACH GIBSON’S COMMENTS: Basically today we took care of business. We were a step slow early on defense but once we got focused I thought we did some nice things. I was pretty happy with the bench play today of Santeri (7 points) Lasse, Kari, Tuomas, Ronnie and Teemu. I thought they all gave us some good minutes especially in the first half. This team is still a ways from being where we want to be but as long as we stay focused, continue to have a great attitude and understand the importance of good “team” defense, we will be fine. This team will score points but being the best defensive team in the league still remains to be seen.
NEXT GAME: 19/10/08 Kauhajoki (2-0) at BC Nokia (1-1) Game time 17:00.
